Namaz at Lucknow University triggers action; 13 students asked to furnish Rs 50k bonds, Bajrang Dal protesters detained
Based on a Hasanganj police report, authorities have initiated preventive proceedings against 13 Lucknow University students, directing them to guarantee peace on campus for one year.

Thirteen students of Lucknow University have received notices in connection with offering Namaz at Lal Baradari on the campus, with officials moving to initiate preventive proceedings under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Meanwhile, members of the Bajrang Dal who staged a protest over the incident were detained by the police.
The order, dated February 24, 2026, has been issued by the Assistant Commissioner of Police/Executive Magistrate, Hasanganj, Commissionerate Lucknow. Registered as Case No. 99/2026, it is based on a challan report submitted by the Hasanganj police a day earlier, on February 23.

According to the document, the act of offering Namaz at Lal Baradari led to tension within the university premises. The order states that such actions affected public peace and social harmony and that the possibility of disturbance in the future cannot be ruled out.

Invoking Sections 126 and 135 of the BNSS, the magistrate has directed all 13 students, whose names and personal details are listed in the order, to appear before the court and furnish a personal bond of Rs 50,000 each. They have also been asked to submit two sureties of Rs 50,000 each.
The bond will remain in force for one year as a measure to ensure the maintenance of peace and law and order.
